Remember Debbie Harry? If, like me, you were a gay teenager in the late seventies and early eighties, you're sure to remember her as the platinum-haired lead singer of Blondie, the darlings of New York's downtown scene who actually made disco cool....
As Blondie's lead singer, Debbie adopted a persona that
parodied the blonde bombshell type. As a result, her often campy performances
were not unlike those of a drag queen. Taking the drag diva thing one step
further, she has frequently appeared at Wigstock, New York's annual drag
festival. That, and her performance in John Waters' camp classic "Hairspray,"
have helped assure her place as a gay icon.
